Good news – we’re expanding our network infrastructure in the United States by nearly tripling the footprint we currently have at one of our primary U.S. data centers in Ashburn, Virginia. The upgrade continues our ongoing efforts to support customers across the U.S. by making network investments and adding new points-of-presence (PoPs).
The Ashburn expansion also adds extra layers of network resiliency to ensure customers experience stable connectivity in the event of natural disasters or network disruptions.
More specifically, the development will occur at the Ashburn DC21 facility, which is managed by our long-time partner, Equinix. The facility is focused on providing low-latency connectivity to and from Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. When completed in early 2022, Ashburn will be our third core node on the U.S. East Coast.
“When it comes to network expansion, our goal is to meet people where they are,” said Nicholas Collins, president, Telstra, Americas. “Demand for international connections beyond the tri-state New York area and along the entire Northeast Corridor is growing. This Ashburn upgrade and the network capabilities it supports will greatly benefit the region’s expanding business and technology communities, as well as satisfy growing consumer demand for network connectivity.”
The Ashburn area of Virginia is home to a diverse range of online commerce and cloud-focused companies, making it a perfect location from which we can support them with our established and developing technologies such as adaptive networking, SD-WAN, ethernet private lines (EPL), global internet and IP transit, and IPVPN network options.
To support our own global growth strategy, this expansion includes plans to add more than 70 Tbps of capacity across our international network by June 2022 to support customers’ growth plans. This investment, part of our ongoing network expansion, will increase key routes between North America, Europe and Asia, with more than half of the new capacity within the Asia-Pacific region where demand from U.S. and Canadian businesses continues to be strong.
The Ashburn node will be fully interconnected with our existing PoPs in New York, New Jersey and California with easy access to cable systems on both coasts. The new installation also expands our relationship with Equinix. We recently collaborated on enhancements to the Telstra Octagon capital markets network solution, and the DC21 site is fully integrated via cross-connection with the other sites on the Equinix Ashburn complex.
